VOIP Services

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)  Is a technology that allows you to make telephone calls using a broadband Internet connection  (T1, DSL or Cable) instead of a regular (or analog) phone line.

Some services using VoIP may only allow you to call other people using the same service, but others may allow you to call anyone who has a telephone number - including local, long distance, mobile, and international numbers. Also, while some services only work over your computer or a special VoIP phone, other services allow you to use a traditional phone through an adaptor.

 

There is still some confusion...

VOIP DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN FREE! The companies that provide VOIP service are just that, for-profit-companies. Don't get the free Skype service confused with a robust  SIP Trunk line that has a Telephone number attached to it. This cost money to provide this service. Also with those free services you are often stuck with there level of support for the masses and NOT for the individual.

You'll first need a reliable internet connection. Depending on the number of SIP Trunk lines and remote extensions will determine if a simple DSL/Cable modem line will work, or if you'll need a dedicated T1 data line for communicating with the outside world.
